Further Research

Glazes and themes

Carol continues to research and develop her ash glazes for firing in the electric kiln and is currently gathering information and ash supplies from other plants to explore their potential as glaze materials.

All the plant material used is sourced from prunings or waste materials. This is important in the ethos of Carol's art practice.

She also continually develops her themes and forms, exploring the application of the glazes and the effects of overlapping different glazes to create further visual effects.

Latest Update

Over the winter, Carol has been collecting material from her garden and the farm, ready for further glaze research, including:

  • Ash from the wood pellet central heating boiler, which burns pine wood pellets from sustainable sources
  • Dead bracken foliage from the farmland margins
  • Blackcurrant prunings from the garden
  • Apple prunings
  • Senecio shrub prunings
  • Plum branch brought down by the wind

These materials will each be burnt separately in a garden bin and the ash collected to experiment with and compare with the ashes used in Carol's PhD research.

Current Research Project

Carol has begun expanding her PhD research to find ways of making more sustainable ash glazes for her art practice. An important aspect of this endeavour is to use materials available in her locality.

She is also exploring practical ways of assessing the potential of new ashes without having an analysis of the ash carried out. In the home studio it is not so easy to obtain analyses as it was in a university setting. Carol plans to eventually share the findings of this research, perhaps through a book, making ash glaze development more accessible to other ceramicists. The aim is to facilitate the use of locally sourced materials, waste products or recycling.
